An Insight Into Life at Old Wall Cottage by Irene Mackie

To find out in a little more detail what makes Old Wall Cottage so unique, please take the time to read this short summary by our Laundry Assistant, Irene Mackie - known to all at Old Wall as Rene.

"Old Wall Cottage Care Home has been established for quite a few years.  It is situated in a rural and quiet location; and it is a Home that management and staff are all proud to be associated with.

The staff team have worked together for many years; some for more than twenty; and describe working at Old Wall Cottage as being like part of a family.  We hope that each resident, their family and their friends will feel likewise.

Our Registered Manager Paul May and our Deputy Manager Dennis Seeruthun both have a background in nursing, with years of experience.  One or other of them is always available for a chat should you have any questions, concerns or queries.

Our Care team consists of Registered General Nurses, Registered Mental Nurses, Senior Healthcare Assistants and Healthcare Assistants.  All of the staff at Old Wall Cottage undergo regular mandatory training; and have attained or are working towards various qualifications including NVQs.

Our Kitchen team – Head Chef Karen and Assistant Chef Wan – provide a varied menu for all to enjoy.  A great deal of thought goes into the meals produced; using fresh ingredients to provide proper “old style” home cooking that our residents enjoy.  Karen regularly speaks with residents to find out what they like and enjoy; and she and Wan are more than happy to cater to any taste, diet or fancy – be it scrambled egg on toast with a cup of tea to lunch with a tipple!  We welcome family and friends who wish to join residents for a meal… all that we ask is that you give the Kitchen team a little notice before hand.

Our Activities Coordinator Brenna works hard to provide a comprehensive and enjoyable programme of activities and professional live entertainment (to see what’s coming up please following this link).  This includes the wonderful kitchen garden, nurtured by both her and the residents, where vegetables are collected and used for lunch.  Friends and relatives are welcome to attend our entertainment; again all we ask is that you give us a little notice so that we can include you in the catering.

Birthdays and Special events are celebrated at Old Wall Cottage; with Brenna, Karen and Wan working together to make each event memorable.

I take care of all of the washing, ironing and small mending on behalf of our residents.  Unfortunately we are unable to hand wash items; and we do request that all clothing is labelled to make it easier for me to return items to you after being laundered.

Our Housekeeper Sue makes sure that the Home is clean, tidy and always feeling fresh.

The Home and grounds are looked after and maintained by our Maintenance Operative Andrew and our Support Worker Ioan.

Our Administrator Shirley is always available to answer any queries you might have about fees, sundries, contracts etc.

Old Wall Cottage also benefits from dedicated weekly visits by Dr Robin Gupta GP of Brockwood Medical Practice.  This service not only provides peace of mind to residents and their families, but also offers an additional expert resource for our senior nursing team to draw upon.  Dr. Gupta, with interest in elderly and mental health care, also provides six-monthly drug reviews for each of our residents as a formal part of his consultative programme.

We also have a visiting Chiropodist, Seniorcise instructor, and hairdresser; as well as Holy Communion which is provided by Rev. Carol Cosslett and Rev. Patty Vigers from our local church.

The Old Wall Cottage family is always here for support, a friendly ear, a cup of tea or just a friendly natter."
